Morning all,

Thanks to Debs from Works in Progress for taking over the MPAY meme from Punky & Me.

This week's topic is favourite cups.

Cups aren't something we use in our house, we're more humorous "mug" kind a peeps!

I do have some beautiful Wedgewood cups and saucers however they're stuck in a cupboard in the side-board (my other half kind of broke the door key in half so we can't get in the cupboard any more)

On the upside though at least I won't break any of my cups and saucers !!!

The howling wind and rain made life rather exciting on Saturday at the Artsmix Art Market in Leeds but it didn't put those hardy Leeds people off - I had a wonderful day meeting lots of new customers and catching up with existing ones ... including my cousin who just happened to be passing by and didn't realise I was there !

Today was much more civilised (weather wise) with Reetsweet at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield - we were as warm as toast singing along to the festive tunes ... I feel quite Christmassy now !

Next weekend I'm back in Leeds on Saturday with Artsmix on Albion Place (nr WHSmith) 11am to 5pm (here's hoping the weather is kinder to us) followed by Christmas in Saltaire on Sunday at The Victoria Hall 11am to 4pm with HTG Events

Phew ... busy, busy, busy .... better get beading !

My EXPLOSIVE family history !

Bonfire Night would seem an appropriate time to blog about my family history and where I get my passion and adoration of fireworks ... I should start by telling you that my family name is Riley .... read on ...

The following is an extract from an old Ossett Trade Magazine from the 1920s and describes Riley's Firework Factory, which was based in Flushdyke.
An Interesting Ossett Industry - Fireworks

For nearly eighty years the firm of Messrs. M. Riley & Sons, of Wakefield Road, Ossett, have been supplying successive generations of schoolboys with that most delightful of possessions, a stock of capital fireworks, and the firm to-day is reputed to be the third largest and one of the most efficient makers of fireworks in the country.

The firm was established by the grandfather of the present proprietors, Mr. Michael Riley, an Ossett man, in 1844, and he was succeeded by his son, Mr. Solomon Riley, who continued the business until his death in 1897, when Mr. Mark Ellis Riley, his brother, who was the organist and choirmaster at Ossett Parish Church, took up the principalship until his death in 1904.

The present proprietors, Mr. A. V. S. Riley and Mr. S. B. Riley, have taken up the family business with an energy and enterprise, which have brought the firm right to the forefront.

The firm has been responsible for the pyrotechnic displays in some of the best-known galas in the North of England. Messrs. M. Riley & Sons provided the fireworks displays in the Coronation festivities in the principal Northern towns, and during the peace rejoicings in 1919 the firm was equally prominent. In 1913 and 1914 the firm secured the contract for the seasonal fireworks displays at Bridlington Spa. They have a big reputation for their spectacular displays, which illustrate Niagara Falls and the Taj Mahal, and include many comical devices, which are exceedingly popular with the Northern crowds.

Messrs. Riley & Sons are well known throughout the Midlands and the North for their admirable provision for the November trade, which now includes not only the Guy Fawkes’ Festival but also the celebration of Armistice Day. It is scarcely credible, but it is nevertheless true, that they manufacture between 250 and 300 different kinds of fireworks, and their manufactures are popular wherever youth foregathers.

Their war service deserves special mention. From August 1915, to the end of the War they were fully employed by the War Office and the Admiralty, and their special knowledge of explosives was extremely useful. They filled as many as between eight and nine million grenades, made red and green square cartridges to the extent of a quarter of a million, and 100,000 parachute cartridges; they were responsible for 6,000 smoke boxes for the Admiralty, and for three thousand deck flares which were used as smoke screens, especially by merchant and passenger ships. That is a war record to be proud of. Since the Armistice the firm has gone back to the normal pyrotechnic and fireworks trade.
However, despite the optimistic words above, disaster was to ruin this Ossett business and cause it to close overnight. The 'Ossett Observer' for August 20th 1927, had the following story:
"Terrible Explosion at Ossett Fireworks Factory" "A terrible explosion resulting in three deaths occurred shortly after seven o 'clock last (Friday) evening (19th August 1927) on the premises of Messrs. Riley and Sons, firework manufacturers of Wakefield Road, Ossett.

The explosion, the cause of which cannot at present be explained, took place in the chemical shed, one of the several detached buildings where the firm's work is carried on. Four persons were working at the time, these being Messrs. Arthur Victor Sheldon Riley (the proprietor); Fred Ward and F. Bottomley (employees), all married men and residing in Springstone Avenue and Mr. Harvey Sheldrake.

Mr. Riley was alive when picked up, but died before his removal. The two others were dead when found outside the building, which was completely shattered by the explosion. Mr. Harvey Sheldrake was in an adjoining shed and escaped personal injury, though he was obviously suffering from shock. The effects of the explosion were felt in various parts of the town and windows were smashed in the Fern House Working Men's Club, in Wakefield Road, opposite Messrs. Riley's works.

Ossett Fire Brigade and Ambulance were quickly on the scene after the alarm, one length of hose being sufficient to prevent the possibility of fire. We understand that the injuries were of a terrible nature and two of the bodies (those of Ward and Bottomley) being practically dismembered. Death was obviously instantaneous in their case. Mr. Riley, whose injuries appeared to be in the lower part of the body, lived 10 or 15 minutes after the occurrence.

The explosion was so terrific that people in all parts of the town immediately rushed into the streets to inquire the cause, and when the fire 'buzzer' was heard shortly afterwards, people wended their way, as if by intuition, in the direction of Riley's factory. Within a comparatively short space of time a huge crowd had gathered on the scene, regardless of the danger of close proximity to buildings of that nature and it was with some difficulty that they could be induced to stand clear. It was fortunate that there was no outburst of flames, but as a precautionary measure, the brigade saturated the remains of the wreckage. The building was practically razed to the ground, and the contents were scattered in all directions. The force of the explosion can be imagined from the fact that two of the bodies were found outside the area of the building, whilst windows were broken in a house in Tumbling Close, some 600 yards away.

The tragedy cast a gloom over the town, all the victims being well-known and highly esteemed. The deepest sympathy is felt with the families of the deceased men in their sad bereavement. Each of the victims leaves a widow and one child.

Scary goings on in Barnsley town !

I had a great fun with Jaygo Touchy Feely Textiles, Cottonarts Bags, Cheery Amour Jewellery and Cupcake Cottage at the Halloween designers market in Barnsley last week

(that is apart from when I fell backwards off my stool and ended up in a giggly heap on the floor ... hence forth to be known as "doing a Karen" !)

We had a lovely visit from Barnsley Mayor, Karen Dyson, which cheered us all up on a very chilly and windy day

I can't wait for my next event which is "I Love Craft" taking place on Saturday 12th November at The Civic, Hanson Street, Barnsley ... not least because it is an indoors event - Woohoo - no need for the snow boots (I hope!)

Autumn in Croatia

I've just returned from a glorious week in Dubrovnik, Croatia - what a fabulous place. The scenery is awesome, the weather was perfect, the food was wonderful and the people were the most helpful and friendly people I've come across in a long time.

We stayed on the Lapad peninsula just outside Dubrovnik Old Town. There was a regular bus service to take us into the Old Town which ran every 15 minutes until 2am so there was no problem getting around.

We plumped for a hotel but I would have no problem recommending staying in one of the many Apartmen or Sobe's that are in and around both the Old Town and Lapad Bay - self catering would be no problem as there are plenty of supermarkets and restaurants knocking about to suit every pocket.

A fabulous place to visit if you get the opportunity ... and the view from the top of the cable car is something else!

I recently had the pleasure of being invited to organise the table decorations for the Lady Captain's Day celebrations at Low Laithes Golf Club in Ossett
I was able to locate these gorgeous butterfly place name cards and Lady Captains Day table sprinkles

which toned in with Marilyn's gold and "cadbury" purple colour scheme perfectly

The ladies had a wonderful time and everyone left with a special golf themed cupcake made especially for the day by the lovely ladies over at Cupcake Cottage in Barnsley

Yee Harr ! I had a brilliant time at BOMfest this weekend.

It was my first taste of festivals and I can really understand why people flock to them ... what a fabulous vibe!!

Where else would you get Buddhist monks, jugglers, face-painters, stilt walkers, guide-dogs for the blind, punk rockers, people wearing a tutu with hold-up stockings + socks n wellies, burger vans and ME !

It was completely BONKERS and I LOVED it ... look out Glasto here I come ... tho I'm still not so sure about the camping bit !!

I spent a fab afternoon last week at The Glow in Leeds with my good friend Diane having a mini makeover.

Neither of us wear much makeup as a rule so it was a bit of an experience having our nails, hair and makeup done - not to mention spending an hour with Leroy having our photo's taken - though the HUGE glass of rose definitely steadied the nerves !

For anyone thinking about a makeover I can highly recommend The Glow in Leeds (http://www.theglowleeds.co.uk/) their prices are very reasonable and there is no hard sell on the photos at the end - in fact I had to ask them !

Do you ever get to the end of the week and think "what have I done this week?"

That's what I was thinking to myself today ... but then I sat down and thought about it and, actually, I've been pretty busy....

On Monday my friend Carole cooked me a gorgeous curried chicken lunch, we also swapped Birthday presents which sounds very efficient but when you learn my Birthday was in May and Carole's was in January maybe we're not as organised as we seem !!

Then on Tuesday I spent a few glorious hours sifting through goodies and seeking out treasure at the Scrap Creative Reuse Art Project with Jaygo Touchy Feely Textiles followed by lunch with girlfriends at Blacker Hall Farm in Wakefield. I make it sound like I go out for lunch all the time but like buses they all came at once plus today's lunch was well deserved before I had to visit the dreaded dentist for a tooth extraction after loosing my year long battle with a tooth abscess ... I definitely deserved a nice lunch don't you think?

Wednesday was a visit to see my Mum who spoilt me rotten as usual !

Thursday was a shopping trip to Leeds to buy Birthday presents for my Mum, my better half and my most bestest friend - how come the three people closest to me have Birthdays over a 3 day period - what kind of planning was that?

After a quick visit to Sainsbugs Friday was a work day making my paper beads into necklaces, bracelets, brooches and keyrings ready for the Notton Village Gala on Sunday. I'm very excited as I've been working on a couple of new comic book and atlas collections - I can't wait to see what people think.

Saturday found me in Barnsley at the absolutely excellent Paper Works Art Exhibition in The Civic - OMG I thought I had patience rolling my paper beads but some of the people exhibiting there are clearly saints !

My week was rounded off with the Notton Village Gala, we were hoping for a glorious sun drenched afternoon but the British weather had another kind of drenching in mind and reluctantly I had to pull out of the event - fingers crossed the sun will be shining next year!

Wonder what's in store for us all next week???

Came up trumps with some fab wallpaper samples, sugar paper, posters, tissue paper, pink netting and even half a dozen christmas pudding pots !

Fun in the sun @ Castle Howard

Well, it was "fun in the sun" at Castle Howard this weekend - not even the fire alarm and subsequent evacuation could take the shine off the day !

After meeting some wonderful customers, some of my Utterly Unique jewellery is now winging it's way to such far away places as Australia, Spain and Prague ... how fabulous is that??

I also met some wonderful fellow crafters including Carol Cooling with her gorgeous wirework jewellery and Jane from Abundant Glass with her beautiful handmade glass crafts to name but two.

The day was finished off perfectly with a visit from The Easter Bunny ... I didn't realise bunnies grew to such a height!!!!

I had a fabulous time with Jill of Jaygo Touchy Feely Textiles yesterday at her Recycled Bag Workshop - if that was a taste of things to come I can see I will have no time to myself as I will be booking on all of her workshops !!!

Newark ... a heavenly weekend !

I have just returned after being treated to a romantic weekend in Newark - we stayed in a wonderful hotel in the heart of the cty and had a lovely time taking in the museums and walking along the banks of the river Trent in the sunshine (yes, sunshine!) as well as taking time to browse round the antiques and collectibles market and even investigate the deepest, darkest corners of the amazing antiques centre!

I've arrived home with a plethora of wonderous bead making materials including sheet music, 1980's Queen & Freddie Mercury calendars, tatty books and magazines not to mention oddles of gorgeous vintage beads ... I am in heaven !

I’m really excited about working with Artsmix as they are dedicated to showcasing individual and unique arts and crafts so what better place to browse and buy the perfect present for your special someone this Valentine’s Day?

Why not treat yourself to a visit to Leeds to indulge in a little retail therapy at the Artsmix Valentine’s Arts & Crafts Market ... not to mention the rest of the fabulous shops including Harvey Nichols AND the fabulous Victoria Quarter !

PS, I Made It are a group of independent Barnsley crafters whose aim is to design and create original, imaginative and innovative handmade goods. Everything from fresh funky fashion designs and jewellery to quirky homewares, cupcakes and body art.

Low Laithes Ladies Invitation Day

I was recently engaged to wrap the prizes at this year's Low Laithes Ladies Invitation Day

Marilyn, the Lady Vice Captain, chose a fabulous purple and gold colour scheme for the prizes then generously gave me a free hand to go wild with tissue, net and lots and lots of luxurious gold satin ribbon - a gift wrappers dream!!

From the smiles on the lucky prize winners faces I think they were happy with the results!!

Butterfly table sprinkles and embellishments gave the whole prize table a wonderful finishing touch.

Thank you to Marilyn, the ladies at Low Laithes Golf Club and all their invited guests for a truely wonderful afternoon.

Elephant Parade 2010

I was recently treated to a glorious weekend in London by my better half. We had a marvellous time lazing around in the sunshine in Hyde Park and seeking out the fabulously decorated elephants in the Elephant Parade 2010. Though, whilst I adore both elephants and pandas, the elephant decorated as a panda is just wrong on all levels!!!

The Elephant Parade 2010 is is a conservation campaign that shines a multi-coloured spotlight on the urgent crisis faced by the endangered Asian elephant and is taking place in London from now until 4th July 2010.

Triumph in Taba Heights!

I have just returned from a well earned rest in the wonderful resort of Taba Heights. It was our third visit to the Resort and the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The weather was a glorious 30 degrees and the staff at the Hotel and the Golf Club took exceptional care of us as usual.

Romantic weekend away - Ravens Hall Hotel, Ravenscar

I have just returned from treating my beloved to a romantic couple

of days at the Raven Hall Country House Hotel & Golf Course

in Ravenscar (between Scarborough and Robin Hood's Bay).

Considering the time of year the weather wasn't bad so we manged

to get in a few holes of golf though the course is challenging and we were

more than happy to make use of the sauna and pool afterwards to

relieve our aching bones !!

The hotel has a fabulous location with spectacular views, the

food was excellent (we ate far too much!) and the staff were very

friendly and efficient.

No doubt this will be the first of many visits !

We were greeted on arrival with coffee and juice and then shown to the changing room where we donned our luxurious dressing gowns and slippers. We had a swim in the pool taking in the jacuzzi, sauna and steam room before a "healthy" lunch in the bistro (that is if you ignore the wine and fudge cake!).

In the afternoon we powered our way round the gym (!) and then meandered our way round the Heat Rooms - our favourites being the aromatherapy room and the saunarium -bliss!!

All in all it was an excellent way to spend a chilly Monday in January - I can heatily recomment it!

What a week this has been ... snow ... snow and more snow ... I can hardly believe the view from our back garden - it's a gorgeous winter wonderland. Though I suppose it is only gorgeous until you want to get out and do something then it loses all it's wonder, especially when you're digging yourself out with a snow shovel!!!

Christmas is over and done with, the new year has begun and it's back to the grindstone - as always I have lots of great ideas for the coming year and I am really excited about sharing them with you so .... watch this space !

North Yorkshire West WI Federation Snippets Evening

I was delighted last Wednesday evening to be invited to the North Yorkshire West Women's Institute Snippets Evening in the picturesque village of Cracoe just north of Skipton.

The ladies invited 9 speakers to join them for the evening to give a 10 minute "snippet" of their talks and I was lucky enough to be one of the 9 invited speakers.

Havercroft Children's Centre Big Birthday Bash - 2nd August 2009

Yesterday I had an absolutely fabulous time decorating Door Hangers with the wonderful children from the Havercroft Children's Centre at their Big Birthday Bash. The weather was uncharacteristially good so the childen (and the Lady Mayor!) were able to enjoy the bouncy castle and gala stalls without having to don their wellies and macs!

The staff at the Centre made me feel very welcome and thanks to Liz, and the rest of the staff's, excellent co-ordination skills the whole event went off without a hitch.

This was the Centre's 1st Anniversary and, if this weekend was anything to go by, I'm sure there will be many more anniversaries to come.

Banners & Pennants

I have recently been making Banners and Pennants for Special Occasions and they have proved very popular.

The Banners and Pennants are available with standard wording such as Happy Birthday, Happy Anniversary, Just Married, Its a Girl, Its a Boy.

Alternatively I can create a personal bespoke Banner or Pennant with wording of your choice, for example: Happy 70th Birthday Mum, Happy Silver Wedding Jack and Joyce, Happy 1st Birthday Liam etc.

The Banners and Pennants are made using laminated gift wrap. The individual letters are then hand-tied with gorgeous little ribbons and decorated with beads and embelishments appropriate to the occasion eg: teddy bears for new baby, horse-shoes for weddings/anniversaries etc.

The Easter Gift Wrapping Parade!

Well, what a glorious start to Spring the Mrs Madden Makes @ Home Spring Fair was.

We had a marvellous afternoon - thank you to everyone who came along and joined us for a glass of wine and some retail therapy!

Can you believe it? Easter is next weekend - has it come round quickly or is that just me??

For those of you giving Easter gifts I have handmade some lovely Easter gift bags and excellent Easter Bunny boxes which are ideal for small gifts or for those all important Easter Egg Hunts which are so popular these days.

Easter bunnies are available in pink or yellow, each have an origami folded box "hidden" between the back and front bunny shapes and are finished off with a ribbon round their necks which handily tie the front and back of the box together!

Small bunnies have a 2 inch (appx) square "hidden" box and are designed to hold either money or, say, 5/6 mini eggs and are priced at £1.75 each.

Larger bunnies have a 5 inch (appx) oblong "hidden" box and are designed to hold a small gift or, say, a bag of mini eggs and are priced at £2.75 each

Gift bags start from £2.50 for the open topped gift bags and £2.75 for the closed top gift bags. The open topped gift bags have ribbon handles secured with pretty brads whilst the closed top gift bags are hand-tied with ribbons and have either a chicken decoration or an papier mache easter egg to finish.

For anyone wishing to wrap larger Easter Eggs and gifts I have a bespoke gift wrapping service starting at £2.50. For this service I envelop your gift with gorgeous coloured tissues, cellophanes and ribbons guaranteed to deliver the WOW factor !

~ Throwing a Party should be a joy not a chore ~

I have organised quite a few parties over the years for both children and grown-ups, everything from general birthday parties through to themed and craft parties.

One that I organised recently was a surprise party for a "special birthday".

As it was a surprise I was called upon to organise absolutely everything from preparing and sending the invitations through to locating a suitable venue, caterer and even the entertainment!

The birthday girl was a ballroom enthusiast so I organised an MC to host ballroom dancing for the start of the evening and then a DJ for the disco later on. For those guests with two left feet I arranged a few party games and then for those who preferred to remain seated I incorporated quizzes and crosswords (based on the guest of honour's birth date) into the table decorations.

For those all important finishing touches I used a combination of balloons, ribbons and candles to decorate the venue; organised a welcome drink for the guests (to ensure that everyone was in the party mood!); and finally I handmade some party favours and gift bags for the guests to take away with them at the end of the evening.

All in all it was a night to remember and it didn't break the bank either !

I have had several enquiries regarding my Gift Wrapping Presentations & Workshops so, for anyone interested, I thought I would put a word or two about them on my blog.

Gift Wrapping Presentations: here I come into your office, shop, society meeting etc and give a short demonstration (appx 1 hour) of how to wrap gifts simply and stylishly. I demonstrate how to wrap everything from a straight forward box through to a more awkward object such as a bottle or a biscuit tin. I give tips and suggestions eg: the different kinds of wrapping available and where to buy them; what kind of tapes are best to work with and where to buy ribbons and embelishments etc.

Gift Wrapping Workshops: again come into your office, shop, society meeting etc but this time not only do I give a demonstration but you also get the chance to take part and have a go yourselves. I usually start with wrapping a straight forward box and then move on to making more interesting gift wrappings such as gift envelopes and origami gift boxes, however, I am happy to tailor the workshops to specific requirements, so if there is anything you would like to learn how to make or do please let me know.

Mrs Madden Makes ..... a resounding success!

It was the first Mrs Madden Makes @ Home Gift Fair last weekend and what a success it was.

Bev banished her poor husband to the loft (!) and opened up her magnificent home to host the event. Christmas music, the intoxicating aroma of oranges and ginger oils filling the air together with all the wonderful products for sale got us all in the mood for buying the first of our Christmas gifts and Diane (of Di-Stress) kept us all calm throughout the afternoon with her taster holistic massages.

It was a wonderfully relaxed afternoon and we all enjoyed ourselves enormously - lets hope Bev decides to repeat the event in the Spring - what a treat that would be.

Well, after a fantastic weekend away at Swinton Park in North Yorkshire to celebrate my good friend Nadia's "Big" Birthday, I am busy, busy, busy getting on with making my Christmas range.

I've been preparing some of my very popular Pre-Wrapped Gift Boxes as well as a full range of gorgeous Gift Bags.

My Gift Bags come in various sizes:-
Small = 17cm x 12cm x 9cm
Medium = 24cm x 14cm x 9cm
Large = 45cm x 20cm x 7cm
Wine = 32cm x 12 cm x 9cm

All my Gift Bag sizes are approximate as they are all handmade and will therefore vary slightly.

The prices of my Gift Bags range from £2.00 to £3.50 each and my pre-wrapped Gift Boxes start from £3.00 each.

Rayon Rose Vintage Fair & Tea Party

Bev Madden (of Mrs Madden Makes) and I had an brilliant time at the Rayon Rose Vintage Fair and Tea Party on Saturday 18th October. The atmosphere was great with 1950's and 60's music echoing round the hall and everyone sporting their retro look and entering into the spirit of things.

To keep with the retro and vintage theme I used a vintage Mrs Beeton's recipe book along with some old atlases and roadmaps to create my vintage range. I also managed to get hold of some really good retro gift paper to make these fab gift bags. Take a look at the photos below and let me know what you think !

The Explanation !

People often ask me "Gift wrapping? ... What do you do ... exactly?"

Well, I do anything and everything to do with gift wrapping. From providing the wrapping paper, bows and embelishments right through to handmaking gift envelopes, gift bags, pre-wrapped gift boxes and decorated gift boxes plus I also offer a bespoke gift wrapping service and provide "how to" demonstrations.

People spend an great deal of time chosing and selecting that perfect gift. Quite often those same people are either uneasy about wrapping their gift; just don't know where to start with that awkward shape or simply don't have the time to spend selecting paper and bows etc.

To cover just these eventualities I have created a series of Pre-wrapped Gift Boxes, Gift Envelopes and Gift Bags.

My Pre-Wrapped Gift Boxes are boxes which I have hand-wrapped using a wide variety of different papers, bows and embelishments. I leave one end of the box open so that the gift can be placed in the box. I have already pre-folded the end of the box and added double-sided tape so, once the gift is in the box simply re-fold the paper, peel the backing from the double-sided tape and seal the gift - Voila, a beautifully wrapped gift without any of the hassle ... what could be easier ?

Gift Envelopes are an idea I came up with to make giving gift vouchers/cards, cd's, dvd's and other small gifts much more interesting. When ever I send or receive a gift voucher I think it is such a shame that the recipient knows, before they have opened the gift, exactly what it is. My Gift Envelopes disguise the gift so it isn't quite as obvious what it is. I hand-make my Gift Envelopes from card or paper which is slightly thicker that the usual wrapping paper then I decorate them with bows and other embelishments.

I have made many different kinds of Gift Bags but my favourite ones are the ones I made from recycled household items such as old roadmaps and atlases or old cookery books and sheet music. These have proved very popular as, not only do they recycle and reuse items otherwise destined for the dustbin but they are also unusual. I make both "open topped" and "closed topped" gift bags. Open Topped Gift Bags generally have handles and Closed Topped Gift Bags are folded at the top and tied with a ribbon or bow.
